We’re big fans of oval soundhole mandolins here at Gryphon, and think that their characteristic warm, bubbly tone is perfectly suited to Celtic styles, old-time string band music, jazz and just about any style that doesn’t demand a percussive bark like bluegrass does. The MD814 is one of Eastman’s fancier models and has a solid, hand carved spruce top and nicely figures solid maple back and sides, and oval soundhole. It features a full-body gloss sunburst finish. This 2009 example just didn’t get played much. If it weren’t for the way the lacquer has settled into the grain of the wood it could almost pass for new.
